Discover and explore National Heritage Week events in Clare

Local heritage groups and organisers, families and communities across the country have developed projects around this year’s theme of ‘Heritage and Education: Learning from our Heritage’. The theme is designed to promote the sharing of experience and knowledge, while ensuring the country’s heritage is more inclusive than ever in restricted times.

Discover some of the Heritage Week events happening in Clare:

• Daily Guided Tours of Scattery Island: Tours of Scattery Island, off Kilrush Coast, take place every day during Heritage Week. The tour includes a guided tour of Saint Senan's 6th century monastic settlement including the famous high round tower, ruins of six churches and Saint Senan's holy well. Participants will learn about the island's rich maritime and Napoleonic wars, history and see the 200-year-old Napoleonic Gun Battery.
• Clarecastle on film in the 1950s: The discovery and restoration of old cine-film taken in Clarecastle in the 1950s resulted in the development of a film which shows aspects of the village that have changed and, in particular, the unloading of ships at Clarecastle Quay. The arrival of ships ceased in 1969, and the film captures the maritime history of the port of Clare in full colour.
• Community memories as a community cohesion resource: This multi-phase inter-generational project involves the video recording of the irreplaceable historical memories of the oldest residents of Miltown Malbay and surrounding area, exploring from their diverse occupational perspectives, how community life has changed between 1930 and 1980. Six interviews will be shown during Heritage Week at Áras OaC, Miltown Malbay.
  
  

This year, projects for National Heritage Week have embraced a variety of digital and online formats, providing innovative ways to explore Ireland’s diverse heritage - from online talks and exhibitions, to virtual tours, podcasts, videos and blogs. This focus brings communities together by allowing the public to discover and explore national heritage treasures from their own homes.

Based on this year’s theme, projects were developed around three broad sub-themes: heritage of your doorstep; heritage and education; and relearning skills from our heritage. All projects shared via the Heritage Week website before the end of August will be considered for a National Heritage Week Award.

With so many of us holidaying at home, National Heritage Week offers new ideas and experiences to build on our renewed interest in heritage. The projects showcased give us all the opportunity to reflect on our heritage, and to learn something about our past that can perhaps influence our future.
